Collagen Injections

Collagen is a natural protein that makes up the elastic support structures of the skin and has been used for decades to augment soft tissue. Collagen injections can temporarily plump thin lips, improve facial contours, fill in acne scars and reduce wrinkles.

About Collagen Injections

The Best Collagen Injection Candidates

Considering collagen injectable fillers

Collagen injections were one of the first injectable fillers used for cosmetic enhancement and are still popular today. Candidates for collagen injections include adult men and women who:

  • Desire fuller lips
  • Wish to reduce acne scars
  • Wish to reduce facial wrinkles
  • Seek hand rejuvenation
  • Are not allergic to injectable collagen
  • Are physically and mentally healthy

Collagen Lip Injections

Lip augmentation with collagen injections

Collagen injections are best known for their ability to create a full, pouty lips with better definition. Before collagen lip injections are administered, allergy testing may be required, depending on the type of collagen you use for lip augmentation.

Human-derived injectable collagen formulas such as Cosmoderm and Cosmoplast generally do not require allergy testing, where as collagen formulations derived from bovine (cow) sources require allergy testing prior to treatment. Collagen derived from porcine (pig) sources, although rarely used today, should never be used for lip injections.

During treatment, a tiny needle is used to inject the collagen into your lips and along your vermillion border at specific injection sites.

Collagen lip injections typically take 15-30 minutes to administer, and treatment results are immediately visible but exaggerated due to swelling. Most often, local anesthesia in addition to the lidocaine already present in the collagen formulation isn't necessary.

Collagen Injections For Acne Scars

Treating acne scars with collagen injections

If Dr. Motlagh feels you can benefit from collagen injections for acne scars, he will begin treatment by cleansing your skin and in some cases, using ice or a topical numbing product to decrease facial sensitivity.

Although it only takes a few moments to inject collagen into each acne scar, the course of treatment may be lengthier than other collagen injection procedures if you have extensive or severe acne scarring.

Your face will be cleansed again after your collagen injection treatment is complete to remove any markings used to identify injection sites. It is important to remember that collagen injections are a temporary solution for acne scars, so skin resurfacing treatments like dermabrasion or chemical peel may be more appropriate if you desire long-term acne scar reduction results.

Collagen Injection Recovery

After your collagen injections

Whether you have collagen injections for wrinkle treatment, acne scar treatment, lip augmentation or some other type of volume restoration, you may experience the following during collagen injection recovery:

  • Mild swelling or bruising
  • Temporary numbness or redness
  • An exaggerated appearance to treated areas (e.g. duck lips)

Apply ice to treated areas periodically, avoid touching or rubbing injection sites and keep your head elevated for a few hours after treatment to reduce these temporary side effects. After a week or maybe two, all temporary side effects should be resolved. Tell Dr. Motlagh if lumps or bumps occur after collagen injections.

Collagen injection results last 2-6 months, so you will need to have periodic treatments if you wish to maintain your look. Tyler Plastic Surgery is centrally located in northeastern Texas to easily accommodate collagen injection touch-ups for patients in Shreveport, Louisiana, Dallas, Fort Worth, Plano, and of course, Tyler, Texas.
