About Facial Reconstruction

Candidates For Facial Reconstruction

When is facial reconstructive surgery needed?

People seek facial reconstructive surgery for a variety of reasons, but one thing every facial reconstruction patient has in common is that they wish to restore facial function and/or appearance.

Facial deformity can occur as the result of birth defects, injury, disease and aging, and facial reconstructive surgery is designed improve the appearance of affected facial areas, as well as improve functionality of muscles, bones, joints, tendons and nerves in these areas.

Men, women and children of all ages may be facial reconstruction candidates provided they are non-smokers in relatively good mental and physical health.

Procedures to reconstruct your face

Function is the primary priority in facial reconstruction, however there is an emphasis on getting the best possible cosmetic result as well. This is why in many facial reconstruction procedures plastic surgeons work to hide scars in natural facial creases and folds and use minimally-invasive surgical techniques, such as endoscopic surgery, wherever possible.

Skin cancer removal on the face is also typically performed as a skin-sparing procedure, meaning that surgery involves removal of as little surrounding healthy tissue as possible to minimize scarring and disfigurement.

Commonly performed facial reconstructive surgery procedures include:

  • Flap surgery
  • Skin grafts
  • Microsurgery
  • Mohs cancer removal surgery
  • Head and neck cancer reconstruction surgery
  • Burn reconstruction
  • Scar revision

Recovery After Facial Reconstruction

Facial reconstruction recovery and healing

The duration of your recovery following facial reconstruction depends largely on which reconstructive surgical procedures you have undergone, the severity of the deformity being treated and your body's unqiue healing process. However, most facial reconstruction patients will be through the initial recovery period within six weeks.

Many facial reconstruction procedures are performed in stages and will involve multiple recovery periods following each surgical procedure.

The most important part of facial reconstruction recovery is following post-operative instructions specified by Dr. Motlagh and attending regular follow-up appointments at Tyler Plastic Surgery.

Tyler Plastic Surgery is centrally located in Tyler, Texas between the Dallas-Fort Worth metro and Shreveport, Louisiana.
