Plastic surgery performed to repair part of the body that is naturally deformed or has been damaged due to trauma is called reconstruction. A variety of general reconstruction procedures may be used to help improve your appearance and fix functional problems. About General Reconstruction
Candidates For General ReconstructionWho can benefit from general reconstruction procedures? General reconstructive surgery procedures are routinely performed on patients of all ages. Birth defects, such as cleft lip and palate, missing ears or digits (fingers or toes) and severe birthmarks, may be treated with general reconstruction procedures. Because general reconstruction procedures are often necessitated by events that cause physical trauma, such as disease, aging-related body changes, vehicle collisions or other accidents, patients may not be expected to be in very good health prior to seeking general reconstruction as they are with purely elective cosmetic surgery. However, general reconstruction patients must be in relatively stable states of mental and physical health before undergoing any non-emergency surgical procedures. General Reconstruction ProceduresDefects that can be treated with reconstruction There are dozens of general reconstruction procedures that patients may seek for a variety of reasons. Breast reduction, otoplasty and blood vessel microsurgery performed in conjunction with free flap breast reconstruction are all examples of commonly performed general reconstruction procedures that provide both aesthetic and functional improvement for patients. Some patients also seek eyelid surgery as a general reconstruction procedure in order to correct upper eyelid hooding that causes vision impairment. Although each of these procedures provides some cosmetic benefit, they are considered general reconstruction procedures when they are performed primarily to correct functional problems. For this reason, insurance companies often cover the cost of general reconstruction where they would not do so if the same procedure was performed as a purely elective cosmetic treatment. Other general reconstruction procedures such as hand surgery or skin cancer treatment are obviously performed not for cosmetic reasons but to correct potentially debilitating or life-threatening health issues. Recovery After General ReconstructionHealing and rehabilitation after general reconstruction Your recovery after undergoing one or more general reconstruction procedures depends on the complexity of your problem and the surgical techniques used to correct it. In general reconstruction cases, plastic surgeons tend to use the least complex method to most effectively achieve the desired result. Oftentimes, general reconstruction procedures are performed in stages, and each stage of surgery will require its own recovery period for downtime and healing. Rehabilitation is also often necessary after general reconstruction, especially with procedures like hand surgery that may affect motor function. Dr. Motlagh will prepare you for the recovery period following your general reconstruction surgery and closely monitor your healing progress during follow-up visits to our plastic surgery office, conveniently located in northeastern Texas and accessible to patients from Dallas, Fort Worth, Plano and Shreveport. |
