Revision surgery describes any cosmetic surgery or reconstructive surgery procedure that is performed after the initial surgical procedure in order to improve surgical outcomes or address complications. About Revision SurgeryCandidates For Revision SurgeryWho can benefit from revision surgery? For patients who are dissatisfied with surgical outcomes or have experienced complications following plastic or reconstructive surgery, revision surgery may be recommended to improve results and address complications. Not everyone can benefit from revision surgery; in fact, sometimes additional surgery can cause more problems or further compromise results. This is why it is important to discuss your concerns during a consultation to learn whether it is possible to achieve the outcome you seek. In general, if you were considered a candidate for a cosmetic or reconstructive procedure, you will also be a good candidate for revision surgery. However, patients will still be required discontinue smoking and be in relatively good physical and mental health before undergoing revision surgery. Revision Surgery ProceduresCommonly performed revisional procedures Patients who undergo unsuccessful reconstruction procedures or wish to improve the aesthetic outcome of reconstructive surgery may choose to undergo revision surgery. It is most important that these patients be healthy enough for additional surgery before it is recommended. Reconstructive surgery patients who have undergone flap procedures wherein flaps did not "take," or survive after transplantation to the recipient site commonly seek revision surgery, as do patients whose skin grafts are unsuccessful. Patients who experience poor scarring also frequently seek scar revision surgery. Cosmetic surgery patients may also seek revision surgery after procedures like breast augmentation, tummy tuck, liposuction and others. Breast augmentation patients who experience capsular contracture (scarring complications), implant deflation or dissatisfaction with their implant size commonly seek breast augmentation revision. Poor scarring is a frequent reason patients seek tummy tuck revision, and liposuction patients who experience contour irregularities are also often seen for revision surgery. Revision Surgery RecoveryHealing after a revisional procedure The recovery after revision surgery is usually quite similar to recovery following your initial surgical procedure, although the duration of the recovery period may be shortened or lengthened in some cases. If drains, compression garments and other post-operative care items were needed following your initial procedure, they will probably be needed following your revision procedure as well. Dr. Motlagh will prepare you to have realistic expectations following your revision surgery and will ensure that you have the proper pre- and post-operative instructions needed to achieve optimal results. Because you are seeking a redo of the same surgery, follow-up appointments to monitor your healing progress and evaluate your results will be very important.
